Tingling testicles!

Since I was young I have occasionally suffered from a transient
tingling-like sensation inside my scrotum. It's not painful, but it is
uncomfortable and makes me stop and squirm. It tends to be more likely
to happen when I'm ill.
When I was young - maybe eight or so, I'm not sure - I had a rather
intense, uncomfortable instance of it and a nurse had me have a bath
in salt water, which helped, and suggested that I'd grow out of it,
which I haven't. The salt water bath isn't much help when it happens
in the middle of a shopping trip or work or whatever, of course.
Can anyone tell me what's going on? I can't find any reference to
anything of the sort at all in the medical literature I've studied so
far. Pointers to preventing or ameliorating it would be even better,
but right now I'll settle for knowing how normal this is and what it's
called! As it's not much of a problem, really, and has gone on for
many years without any other apparent effects, it doesn't seem worth
bothering my doctor about unless I'm going anyway.
